✨Happy birthday Peggy Guggenheim!

Peggy was born in 1898 in New York in a financially wealthy family. Guggenheim family from the side of her father and Seligman family from the side of her mother. Her father died on the Titanic when Peggy was only 14 years old.

At the age of 21, Peggy became financially independent. She was 23 when she decided to travel to Europe. She studied about Italian Renaissance through the books that one of her friends has given her.

In 1938, Peggy opened “Guggenheim Jeune” modern art gallery in London. After a year and a half, she closed the gallery because it proved to be very expensive. Then she traveled in Paris with a list of artworks that she would like to collect. It was right before the war so art was in a very good price. When the war started, the museum idea went on hold and instead she decided to buy artworks for herself.

In 1941, Peggy arrived in New York and she gets married to Max Ernst. Then she resumes the idea to open a museum-art gallery. In 1942 she opens her gallery in New York named “Art of This Century”. This was the first time that her collection was displayed to the public. The ticket cost was 1 dollar and the income went to the Red Cross.

In 1943 she decides to represent some of the young and new American talent in order to balance her European collection. She threw a one man show for Pollock.

After the war she returned to Europe, she put her works in a storage and leaves the running of the gallery to others. In 1947 “Art of this Century” gallery closes. In 1948 she is invited to exhibit her collection in this year’s Venice Biennale. She is offered the space of the Greek Pavilion, as the Greeks at this time were at civil war.

In 1949 Peggy finds her future home and new gallery space in Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. In 1951 Peggy opens up her palazzo to the public 3 times a week. In 1969 Peggy decided to leave her collection to the Solomon Guggenheim Foundation in New York upon her death, with the guideline that the collection will never be divided, sold, or leave Venice. She died in 1979 at the age of 81.
